Internship Opportunities with the US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps

The U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps offers three excellent opportunities for students to serve their country while completing or continuing their education. If you are interested in a public health career, we encourage you to apply to the Junior Commissioned Officer Student Training and Extern Program (JRCOSTEP), Senior Commissioned Officer Student Training and Extern Program (SRCOSTEP) or FDA/CDER Academic Collaboration Program. All three programs offer excellent benefits and are highly competitive. For more information or to apply visit http://www.usphs.gov/student/

JRCOSTEPs are available for general public health, environmental health and nursing. Here is a tip sheet for those interested in the environmental health area. JRCOSTEP Tips for EHOs Nov 2009

Here is a note from a BYU Alum about this program:

Dear BYU Public Health Colleagues,

This is an excellent opportunity!  Even if students are not interested in a career with the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS), it’s a great internship opportunity with very good pay.  I am a BYU alumni (graduated 1976 with BS in Health Science, emphasis in Environmental Health, Spanish minor).  After 26 years as a USPHS officer, I can honestly say that this was the best career decision I ever made.  Please forward this to anyone who may be interested.  I would be happy to answer any general questions about the USPHS and Environmental Health Officer (EHO) category.  LCDR Jennifer Freed can answer specific questions about the JRCOSTEP program.

Very Respectfully,

CAPT Jan C. Manwaring, MPH, REHS
