YOU can make a difference in public health advocacy this legislative session

The Utah legislative session is coming up at the end of this month and YOU have a chance to make a difference. Utah’s cigarette tax is among the lowest in the United States. In fact, Utah hasn’t raised taxes on cigarettes in eight years. Other states have raised cigarette taxes a combined 101 times since 2000. Trends from other states show that raising tobacco taxes reduces cancer rates. Higher taxes in Utah could also prevent 19,000 young people from starting to smoke and encourage 3700 others to quit smoking. If you agree that raising the tax on cigarettes is a more reasonable way to pay for tobacco-related medical costs and cessation programs, now’s the time to speak up. Especially now – Gov. Herbert isn’t exactly excited about new taxes – even this one.

Go to: http://www.utahtobaccotax.org/ and spend a couple minutes personalizing a pre-written letter that will be sent automatically to our governor and other major decision-makers in Utah.
