HELP International is currently seeking summer interns in Hyderabad, India. We are specifically targeting Public Health students and professionals. We believe the rigorous curriculum will have prepared students to competently execute the duties and tasks required by our organization in the field. Their skills and knowledge will complement those offered by student participants who have already committed to volunteering and interning in Hyderabad, India. These students are from across the nation completing both their Bachelor’s and Masters’ in community and global health, dietetics, advertising, international relations, business, sociology, social work, and engineering, to name a few. Their skills will contribute to the successful execution of HELP projects and those executed in conjunction with Peace Corps, LEPRA Health, and many other international organizations. Interns will have the unique opportunity to coordinate volunteers, act as a liaison between the country directors, community partners and the executive office, and most importantly, spearhead and lead projects. Of course, this is also an excellent opportunity for the augmentation of cross-cultural understanding.

The mission of HELP International is to empower people to fight global poverty through sustainable, life-changing development programs, made possible by strategic alliances formed with local community organizations. HELP’s core competencies are education, entrepreneurship/business and public health. This year, HELP India will be expanding and developing its programs to include agriculture and engineering.

Volunteer opportunities are also available and we encourage students who are not selected as interns to volunteer and select the “entrepreneurial track” in order to gain leadership experience. India is just one of the countries in which HELP International operates. Volunteer opportunities and some internship opportunities are also available in Uganda, Peru, Nicaragua, Belize, Tanzania, Fiji, and Thailand.

Toxicology is the study of the adverse effects of chemicals on living systems.  In other words, how do chemicals affect survival or normal function of individuals? This course will

examine basic concepts of toxicology as they apply to environmental and occupational exposure to toxic substances. The class will use a case study format.

Course Learning Outcomes

Describe the chemical properties and the biological processes associated with the toxicokinetics (i.e., how the body handles chemicals) of chemical agents of public health importance.

Describe molecular, cellular and pathophysiological response resulting from exposure to chemical agents relevant to human health.

Explain the science underlying testing for the ability of chemical to elicit adverse human health effects.

Understand and apply the risk assessment process through the research and presentation of case studies in toxicology.

“This year, HEAU recognizes an outstanding individual for the Catherine Summerhays award.  This recipient joined the Department of Health Science at Brigham Young University (BYU) in 2005. Prior to joining the faculty at BYU, he spent 11 years teaching health and physical education at Montana State University – Billings. There he also served as Department Chair of Health and Human Performance for several years prior to becoming the founding Dean of a new College of Allied Health Professions.

At BYU, he maintains an interest in administration by teaching a graduate course in Public Health Administration. He also teaches Public Health Education Methods, and Program Planning and Evaluation at the undergraduate level. He also enjoys working with communities and involving students in service learning projects. He has worked collaborative on many community initiatives of public health interest- especially those targeting youth and families.

In addition, his LDS mission to northern Arizona and work experience in Montana have fueled an interest in rural health issues and health disparities among Native American populations. He is currently collaborating with faculty colleagues to study the family as a public health setting of practice.

He received a doctorate in community health education from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and his bachelors and masters degree from BYU. He has served on numerous committees and published many articles on health education throughout the country.

He and his wife Loraine have 4 children and reside in Spanish Fork, Utah. This recipient has, and will continue, to make a profound impact on health education throughout Utah.

About the Summerhays Award:

During the late 1970′s and into the early 1980′s Catherine Summerhays was the director of the Bureau of Health Promotion/Risk Reduction for the Utah Department of Health. Catherine was instrumental in continuing successes of many Bureau programs while sharing a strong interest in employee wellness.

Under her direction and vision, the Healthy Utah program was developed and implemented. Utah became one of the first states to implement a Behavioral Risk Factor Survey under her direction as well.

This award is given to a person or program which has been shown to promote the advancement of quality health education. This award may be give to any person or program regardless of their professional affiliation.
