HELP International is currently seeking summer interns in Hyderabad, India. We are specifically targeting Public Health students and professionals. We believe the rigorous curriculum will have prepared students to competently execute the duties and tasks required by our organization in the field. Their skills and knowledge will complement those offered by student participants who have already committed to volunteering and interning in Hyderabad, India. These students are from across the nation completing both their Bachelor’s and Masters’ in community and global health, dietetics, advertising, international relations, business, sociology, social work, and engineering, to name a few. Their skills will contribute to the successful execution of HELP projects and those executed in conjunction with Peace Corps, LEPRA Health, and many other international organizations. Interns will have the unique opportunity to coordinate volunteers, act as a liaison between the country directors, community partners and the executive office, and most importantly, spearhead and lead projects. Of course, this is also an excellent opportunity for the augmentation of cross-cultural understanding.

The mission of HELP International is to empower people to fight global poverty through sustainable, life-changing development programs, made possible by strategic alliances formed with local community organizations. HELP’s core competencies are education, entrepreneurship/business and public health. This year, HELP India will be expanding and developing its programs to include agriculture and engineering.

Job Summary:
The Evaluation Unit at OEPR seeks a self-directed, resourceful master’s level intern (MPH, MPA, etc) to join its diverse team of professionals as early as Summer 2012 through Spring 2013.

The intern will report to the Director of Evaluation and collaborate on the design and implementation of a broad range of preparedness assessments, including exercises, trainings, and real events. Emphasis will be on effectively and efficiently capturing baseline trends of NYC populations related to public health emergency preparedness and community resilience/recovery; a second goal will be to co-design data collection to inform program development and 4-year strategic planning. The intern should have experience working with diverse communities and some supervisory experience as we work to engage community members and organizations to build citywide resilience and recovery capacity. The internship will allow an opportunity to merge creativity, intellect and skill to analyzing information collected, and translating that data into information to increase the Agency’s and the City’s preparedness.

Preferred Skills
Demonstrated program management skills; supervisory experience a plus; excellent interpersonal skills, including high competence in writing and oral presentation; strong analysis skills (quantitative and/or qualitative) and experience with large data sets a plus; strong interest in evaluation, community public health; interest in emergency preparedness is ideal but not required

Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college.

Job Summary:
The mission of the Office of Emergency Preparedness and Response (OEPR) is to coordinate the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH)’s emergency preparedness and response activities to ensure the public’s health during emergency incidents. The Community Resilience and Recovery Intern:

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Community Resilience & Recovery within DOHMH’s Office of Emergency Preparedness and Response (OEPR), the intern will work on a major component of the strategic plan for the first year of the Community Resilience & Recovery five-year plan. The intern will assist OEPR with community resilience and recovery projects, including efforts to understand the landscape of existing coalitions and networks serving New Yorkers. This information is invaluable to OEPR’s ability to engage coalitions, networks and communities in building resilience. The intern will play a crucial role in identifying these networks and coalitions as well as building relationships that will strengthen New York. The intern selected for this project will also be the central planning point of contact for regional coordination for the NYC Risk Based Funding Pilot project by providing staff support to coordinate meetings and facilitate discussion amongst the Regional Catastrophic Planning Group and the representatives from the MSA in order to meet pilot project deliverables.
